Showreel Upate 2010
by David on Sep.26, 2010, under Reel
This is a composite of work mainly from 07-present. I have been doing some work in Mudbox (the elephant); that is new and so I added it to some of my CBC and other projects for this reel. The tentacles and the jelly fish are the result of some experimenting in Maya’s paint effects. I chose these elements to represent evolution and success because less complex organisms are often the most prolific and successful in nature. I reflected on this concept when I built the MD 1020 ( the farm scene tractor). To me these old school farm machines are a symbol of the balance between institutions and people. The steel wheeled tractors were built to last and designed to be maintained by the user. When corporations create sustainable products that allow people to improve their lives and contribute to their communities then a result is harmony in society. I built the tractor by referring to manuals and photographs and enjoyed the learning process of reconstructing an accurate 3D model this way.
Whistler sliding center recreation for Fifth Estate.

For “Death at the Olympics” I recreated the luge track at Whistler in Maya and used AfterEffects for compositing and graphics. The challenge was to make the dimensions as accurate as possible and I used several resources for reference material including a low poly model from Google Earth that I used to position loft curves along the length of the track. From there I had photos and videos to use as a reference. I also used digital elevation maps from www.geomaticssystems.com as displacement maps to create the terrain. Budget and time restraints aside, the results were pretty good.

Christmas time
by David on Dec.19, 2010, under Special
I hope everyone has a great timeĀ over the holidays. I made this greeting animationĀ based on some zoetrope animations I have seen done using a turntable for motion. I wanted to see if I could reproduce the effect in maya. It was interesting to work out the correct placement and number of keyed models based on the turntables 33 rpm speed.
3D Colour Analglyph
by David on Oct.06, 2010, under Special
I setup a 3D camera rig in Maya and rendered a short clip of my rsm elephant. I like the way the trunk floats forward. The focal point is around it’s body mass’ centre.
